Comprises diary, 27 October 1915-14 May 1919, describing Davies' experiences on active service from the time he left Melbourne on the troopship "Ulysses", in France and Belgium, and his return journey to Melbourne on the "City of Poona". The diary was given to Davies and the inscription calls him "Ernest". Diary also contains poems by Davies, including a number dedicated to his mother, and others dedicated to his fiancee Emily (Celia Emily Tatterson).

Private Ernest David Davies (no. 2630) enlisted on 13 July 1915 and was repatriated to Australia on 28 March 1919. He served with the 22nd Battalion and joined the 7th Battalion on 24 February 1916.
